Google Drops $7.99 AI Plus Tier for U.S. and 34 More Countries

Google just made its growing lineup of AI subscriptions a lot more interesting for regular users around the world.

Today, the tech giant announced that its Google AI Plus plan — a mid‑tier AI subscription — is now available in the United States and 34 additional countries where its AI services operate. That means this cheaper AI option, previously limited to some international markets, has finally rolled out everywhere Google offers its AI stack.

The price in the U.S. is set at $7.99 per month, putting it in direct pricing territory with similar casual‑user plans from competitors. For a limited time Google is also offering 50% off for the first two months, effectively letting new subscribers test drive the service for under four bucks a month at launch.

The real draw here isn’t just the price tag. AI Plus gives subscribers enhanced access to Google’s flagship generative AI tools, including the advanced Gemini 3 Pro model and creative engines like Nano Banana Pro inside the Gemini app. You also get creative tools for video in Flow and research and writing help in NotebookLM. The plan comes with 200GB of storage and lets you share all benefits with up to five family members.

For existing Google One Premium 2TB subscribers, there’s good news: Google says all AI Plus benefits will automatically be added to their accounts in the next few days at no extra cost.

This rollout marks a strategic shift for Google as smart AI tools become mainstream consumer tech rather than enterprise‑only services. The company first tested the mid‑tier plan in emerging markets like Indonesia last September, pricing it at roughly $4.50 a month locally before gradually adding more regions. Now those early experiments have matured into a full global offering.

The broader context here is competition. Rivals such as OpenAI have similarly priced offerings for everyday users, including the ChatGPT Go plan at around $8 per month in the U.S. Google’s move to match or slightly undercut that reflects an ongoing battle for casual AI users who aren’t ready to pay two‑figure monthly fees for advanced capabilities.

Unlike the higher‑end AI Pro or AI Ultra subscriptions that cost closer to $20 or more and pack enterprise‑level features, AI Plus sits firmly in the “get stuff done without paying too much” category. Users still get access to capable models and tools, but with lower usage limits compared with professional plans.

This expansion also raises some broader questions about where AI is headed next. Does making these tools cheap and widely available accelerate adoption among students, creators, and casual users? Or does it risk watering down the value of premium subscriptions if too much gets unlocked at lower price points?

Either way, Google has just made its AI ecosystem harder to ignore — especially for people who were waiting for a more affordable entry point into generative AI. With the plan now live in major markets around the world, the conversation is shifting from “who has the best AI” to “who can get the most people using it.”

What do you think? Is this pricing aggressive enough to pull users away from rivals, or just another check‑in box on the road to ubiquitous AI subscriptions?
